Zepbound™ and Wegovy® are FDA-approved for weight loss. Ozempic® and Mounjaro® are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes treatment, but may be prescribed off-label for weight loss at a healthcare provider’s discretion.  As an alternative to FDA-approved branded products, where appropriate, a provider may prescribe a compounded drug that is effective when prescribed off label for weight loss. Z-Plan sourced compounded drugs are prepared by a state-licensed sterile compounding pharmacy, however compounded GLP-1 medications themselves are not FDA-approved. Thoroughly review all warnings and essential safety information regarding these drugs.

Zepbound 101

What is Zepbound™?

Zepbound is a brand-name version of tirzepatide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist and gastric inhibitory polypeptide—or GLP-1/GIP for short. It’s FDA-approved for weight loss and managing certain symptoms and risks of type 2 diabetes.

How does Zepbound work?

Zepbound works by reducing appetite and how much you eat. Zepbound works differently than other anti-obesity medications by activating 2 hormone receptors.

Do you prescribe Zepbound for weight loss?

Yes, Zealthy providers prescribe Zepbound for weight management in adults, if appropriate.

How can Zepbound help with weight loss? Zepbound helps regulate blood sugar and appetite – key factors in resetting your body's weight set point to maintain a lower weight.

What is Zepbound's dosing?

Zepbound dosing starts low and gradually increases over a few months. The lowest dose is 2.5 mg once a week, and the maximum is 15 mg weekly. Your provider will tailor the schedule to your needs, and provider further instructions on how to administer your weekly injection.

How do you take Zepbound?

Zepbound comes in a prefilled injection pen with multiple doses. You’ll administer the injection once weekly under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or arm. The pen has a tiny needle designed for minimal discomfort, and your provider will offer guidance to ensure you’re comfortable using it.

Will my insurance cover the cost of Zepbound?

Coverage varies, and our insurance coordinators will work directly with your insurer to determine if your GLP-1 medication is covered.

Currently, individuals with government healthcare coverage, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or TRICARE, are not eligible for the Zealthy Weight Loss Program, as these plans typically do not cover GLP-1 medications. However, federal employees with insurance through the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHB) may participate.
